Edward merely continued to stare up at Mick in hard anger as the vampire bagan to laugh. Mick's thoughts were those of a true predator. Sharp. Cold. Unfeeling. Edward was beginning to realize just how dangerous these vampires were. He knew, with no shadow of doubt, that were they to follow through with their twisted plans that they would not show one inch of mercy. The Cullens needed a plan. If they couldn't outsmart them, then they were all doomed. The thought, horrific as it was, caused a wave of muted anguish to course through him.
Too late, he realized how large of a mistake that was.
Mick raised his legs and kicked out at Edward using all of his weight. It felt like a battering ram had been thrust into his chest and the force was great enough to send him flying far back into the alley, crashing into the wall so that a large section of it collapsed upon him. Momentarily dazed, Edward began to sit up, brushing away brick and mortar with an angry swipe of his arm. He growled in frustration directed entirely at himself. How could he be so careless?
But the frustration quickly vanished when his eyes sought out Mick once more. If Edward's heart still beat, it surely would have ceased to in that one, terrifying moment.
“Well Edward, this was a nice little play date. We should do this again sometime so that I can finish you off, but as you can see I have other priorities to attend to…”
He couldn't move. He sat there paralyzed with terror as he watched Mick swing Bella over his shoulder like a rag doll. Edward heard her cry of pain and the sound felt like a stab in his own heart. And then they were gone.
"BELLA!" he screamed. Edward furiously shoved the rest of the debris off of him and leapt to his feet, completely intent on following them. He ran out of the alleyway, going so fast that he nearly ran into Carlisle. The look of horror he gave his father said volumes.
"He...he took her. He has Bella. I couldn't..." Edward stopped, overcome with emotion. It was rare for him to be anything less than eloquent in his speech. But he couldn't remember a time when he felt more terrified. Bella's scent still lingered in the air. He closed his eyes and took it in, knowing now which direction to follow. When his lids opened, they revealed eyes that had gone dark with fury and determination. And, with one last glance at Carlisle, Edward sped off towards the woods, knowing the older man would soon follow.
